HISTORY

Graduating from LSU we moved to Houston for better job opportunities. After being away from home for over ten years we began to miss the things we loved about Louisiana: Family, Friends, Culture, Food and LSU. Despite a higher cost of living and fewer job opportunities, we decided to come back home to the things we love. This required a smaller home, with no space for our LSU gameroom. So we decided to convert the garage into a neighborhood watering hole (i.e. man cave). So as they say “If you build it….they will come”…..and they did!

The pool table, dart board, curio cabinet, table & chairs, refrigerator and pictures came from our old house. In 2007 one of my neighbors donated a kegorator machine, which I replaced in 2009 with a refrigerator converted kegorator (withstands the garage heat much better).  Thanks Ron for converting the refrigerator.  After we converted the garage in our new house we added a dry bar that was hand made by my grandfather (Pop).

The day we closed on our new house the painter started on the garage. Our neighbors didn't know what kind of freaks were moving in when they saw the gold walls...but that soon changed once the movers arrived with pool table.

In 2010 I sold the pool table and dart board to make room for a bar.

Originally I had a 32" tube television when I moved into the garage. In 2008 LSU played for the National Championship in the Super Dome in New Orleans, which is just across the lake from where I live. Tickets to the game were hard to get and expensive. I am an LSU season ticket holder, so there was a chance that I could purchase face value tickets directly from LSU as part of a lottery system. I told my wife that if I didn't win the lottery I wanted to take the money we would have to spend to get tickets from a broker and use it to purchase a new high-definition flat screen for the garage and throw a National Championship viewing party.

Thanks to Glenn, one of the founders of GarageFreaks.com, and my good friend Ron in 2008 we were able to paint the floor purple with gold and white chips.  However after only two years the paint started to come up because I didn't prepare the surface properly.  In 2010 I grinded the floor to the bare concrete and started all over.  Check out the FAQ page for more details.  Thanks again to Ron for doing all of the work (I am just the unskilled labor.....i.e. gopher).

The poker table and chairs are a 2009 addition, replacing the worn out recliner.  Thanks to my neighbor Tim for hooking me up with the chairs!

The 52" LCD HDTV is a December 2009 addition.  You can never have enough TVs!

2010 Renovation

.

RENOVATION BLOG UPDATE:

Renovation Update 05/24/10 - The counter tops are completed and bar construction is finished.
This concludes the 2010 renovations.  A special thanks to my neighbor and good buddy Ron!

Renovation Update 05/16/10 - We finished two coats of varnish on the sides and three coats on
top.  We still need to put a few  more coats on top.  The cabinets have been mounted and the
counter top plywood and cement  board have been added.   The final step on the counter tops
will be the tile.

Renovation Update 05/11/10 - The first coat of stain is complete.

Renovation Update 05/09/10 - The bar is completed, except for the cabinets and countertop behind
the bar, and it looks absolutely amazing.  Work behind the bar won't begin until the staining and
varnish are finished.  Saturday we installed the traditional bar molding, added wood putty and
sanded.  The bar is now ready for staining.  Thanks again to my neighbor Ron.  This is truly
his creation that wouldn't have been possible without him

Renovation Update 05/02/10 - Bar construction has begun.  On Saturday we (actually Ron)
framed the bar.  Sunday we (mostly Ron again) did most of the molding work and started on
the bar top.

Renovation Update 4/24/10 - Everything is back in the garage and it is functional.  We
started ordering materials and the bar molding & cabinets have arrived.  Construction on
the bar should begin within the next couple of weeks.  Check back periodically for details.

Renovation Update 4/11/10 - Finally the weather was warm enough to finish the floor.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday we had absolutely perfect weather.  Next weekend we  will
move everything back into the garage and start working on the bar.  A special thanks to  my
good buddy Ron for all the help (he actually does all the work I am just the unskilled labor).
Check out the FAQ page for details on how we fixed the floor.

Renovation Update 3/7/10 - We are dead in the water until we can finish the
floor.  The air temperatures have been too cold and the surface temperature on the
garage floor is too low to finish the painting.  This particular solvent-based epoxy paint
requires a minimum surface temperature of 50F, which is about where the garage floor
has been hovering.  We figured this out the hard way when it took 3 days for the first
coat of paint to dry.  Hopefully we can get warmer weather soon and get back to work.
In the meantime we installed two ceiling fans to pass the time.

Update 2/21/10 - Renovations will include removal of the pool table, repainting of the
floor and installation of a bar.  Existing piping from a previously removed utility sink
has to be relocated.  The old floor paint had to be grinded to the bare concrete before
the first coat of two part solvent-based epoxy paint was applied.
